What is Life Essentials?

Life Essentials is an ongoing series of short videos exploring identity, belonging, purpose and faith. Each topic is designed to spark meaningful conversations and comes with discussion questions to help you go deeper. Each episode can be watched and discussed in less than 20 minutes.

What is the purpose of Life Essentials?

Life Essentials exists to help young people explore the big questions of life and faith together with their friends. It creates a simple, welcoming space for honest conversations about what matters most.

Who is Life Essentials for?

Life Essentials is designed for young people who are open to exploring questions about faith and life, including those who may not yet be ready for the full Alpha Youth Series. It is designed to be run by young people, with their friends.

What topics are covered?

Life Essentials explores a range of topics on identity, belonging, purpose & faith, and explores questions that matter most to young people. The new Life Essentials: Young Adults Edition particularly features episodes on career pressure, heartbreak, glow up culture, truth, transcendence, legacy, forgiveness and ancient truths.

What is the target demographic of Life Essentials?

Life Essentials: Young Adults Edition was created with young adults aged 18-24 in mind.

Where does Life Essentials fit in the Alpha ecosystem?

Life Essentials is a simple, accessible resource that sits alongside Alpha and other Alpha resources. It is designed to help people take an initial step into conversations about faith and life, particularly those who may not yet be ready to explore faith through a full Alpha course.

Running Life Essentials

What does a Life Essentials session look like?

It's simple: Connection (food & hospitality), Content (watch a video) and Conversation (discussion). Gather together, grab some snacks, watch an episode and use the discussion questions to continue the conversation.

How long does a regular Life Essentials session last?

Each episode and discussion can be completed in less than 20 minutes, making Life Essentials easy to fit into a busy schedule.

How many people should be in a Life Essentials group?

Life Essentials is designed to be flexible and work with different group sizes. The most important thing is creating a space where everyone feels comfortable joining the conversation. If you have a large group watching the videos, you might like to break up into smaller groups for the discussion time so that your friends feel comfortable sharing their thoughts.

Where should I run Life Essentials?

Anywhere that works for your group! You could meet at home, at church, on campus, at a café or another safe and comfortable space where you can watch the videos and have a conversation together.

What do I need to run Life Essentials?

All you need is a group of people, a way to watch the videos, the discussion questions and some snacks. That's it!

What does 'Create a Watch Party' mean?

A Life Essentials Watch Party is simply a group of people gathering to watch Life Essentials together and continue the conversation afterwards. Creating a Watch Party only takes a few minutes.

  1. Sign in to your Life Essentials account.

  2. From your dashboard, select Create a Watch Party.

  3. Choose the Life Essentials series you'd like to watch.

  4. Enter your Watch Party details, including your group name, group details and church connection (if applicable).

  5. Review your information and select Create Watch Party.

  6. Invite your friends and you're ready to go!

What does it cost to run or attend Life Essentials?

Life Essentials is 100% free to access, run and attend. Thanks to our generous donors, there's no cost to participate. You just need to provide the snacks!

Getting Started

How do I start?

Find some friends to run Life Essentials with you and invite people you'd like to join. Then sign into your Life Essentials dashboard to access the videos and resources, grab some snacks and get started!

  1. Sign in to your Life Essentials account.

  2. From your dashboard, select Create a Watch Party.

  3. Choose the Life Essentials series you'd like to watch.

  4. Enter your Watch Party details, including your group name, group details and church connection (if applicable).

  5. Review your information and select Create Watch Party.

  6. Invite your friends and you're ready to go!

Where can I access the videos and register my group?

You can access the Life Essentials videos and create your Watch Party at lifeessentials.com.au. Simply create or sign in to your account to get started.

Where do I access training materials and episode guides?

Training materials, episode guides, promotional materials and other resources are available through the Life Essentials platform. Once you've created your account, you'll be able to access all the resources you need to run Life Essentials.

A Safe Space for Young People

I'm under 18. Can I run Life Essentials for my friends?

The new Life Essentials series has been specifically designed to empower young people to help their friends engage with big questions about life. It's important to create an atmosphere where young people are comfortable and able to express themselves. If you are a young person running a course for your friends, have a responsible adult involved to help facilitate a safe environment. This could be a parent or guardian, teacher, your youth leader, or church pastor.
